Algenol and Reliance Industries Ltd., have successfully deployed India’s first Algenol algae production platform. The demonstration module is located near the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery, the world’s largest.
Algenol announced today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved fuels made from Algenol’s process as an advanced biofuel, meeting the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction requirements under the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).
The world’s first wood-based renewable diesel biorefinery has started commercial production in Lappeenranta, Finland. UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery is based on a hydrotreatment process developed by UPM, and produces approximately 120 million litres of renewable UPM BioVerno diesel yearly.
In June 2014, Gevo commenced the co-production of isobutanol and ethanol at Luverne, with one fermenter dedicated to isobutanol production and three fermenters dedicated to ethanol production. Gevo had articulated a goal of reaching isobutanol production levels of 50-100 thousand gallons per month by the end of 2014. In the month of December, Gevo produced over 50 thousand gallons of isobutanol, meeting the Company’s stated goal.
Iogen Corporation, a leading developer of cellulosic biofuel technology, and Raizen, one of the world’s largest producers of sugarcane ethanol, are pleased today to announce they have begun production of cellulosic ethanol on schedule at Raizen’s newly expanded Costa Pinto sugar cane mill in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Late yesterday Congress passed tax extender legislation including a one-year retroactive extension of four key advanced biofuels tax provisions as part of a larger package of tax credit extensions.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today that USDA is making $5.6 million in grants to 220 producers across the nation to support the production of advanced biofuels, and is awarding more than $4 million in additional grants that will advance the bioeconomy and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.
Advanced and cellulosic biofuels are essential to achieving that security. Unlike fossil fuels — which represent a finite resource — these fuels are produced from renewable sources like plants, algae, waste and animal fats. As a result, they improve our country’s energy security, reduce greenhouse gases and complement rising domestic oil and natural gas production.
UPM and WWF Finland have engaged in a dialogue on the status of wood-based liquid biofuels in Finland and present a list of joint measures to be carried out to promote sustainability.
The airplane manufacturer Boeing has successfully tested Neste Oil’s NEXBTL diesel fuel as a component of aviation fuel. The first test flight took place on the U.S. using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and further testing is being planned.

Oberon Fuels Inc. Oberon’s biogas-based DME is now eligible for high value D-Code 3 (cellulosic) and D-Code 5 (advanced) renewable identification numbers (“RINs”) under the RFS. The EPA determined that biogas-based DME produced from the Oberon process resulted in an approximate 68% reduction in greenhouse gases when compared to baseline diesel fuel.

From the perspective of the advanced and cellulosic biofuels industry, the current RFS debate has become mired in short-term concerns – like the blend wall and prices for RINs. Much of the commentary loses sight of the bigger picture about policy signals necessary to foster investment in a robust market for advanced biofuels.
